new-990-imageIn the third and final installment of my news and information updates that clean out my in-boxes (the last two are here and here), I will lead off with two time sensitive items.

1. 990, 990-EZ, 990-PF and 990-N

Is your organization on a calendar fiscal year?  Then your forms are do this Friday, May 15, 2009.  From the IRS:

Calendar year exempt organizations that file Forms 990, 990-PF, or 990-EZ are reminded that their annual information returns are due on May 15. An organization may request an initial automatic extension of time to file its annual information return by filing Form 8868 by the due date of the return. For more information, see Form 8868 and its instructions [a pdf].

Forms 990, 990-EZ and 990-PF for non-calendar year organizations are due on the 15th day of the 5th month following the end of their annual accounting period.

Form 990-N filers cannot get an extension to file.  Information about the 990-N can be found here.

Human Resources News For California Nonprofits

Two pieces from What’s New in Employment Law from earlier this year that detail the differences and similarities between California and Federal rules in charts provided by The California Fair Employment and Housing Commission: The comparison between the Federal ADA rules (both new and old) and the California rules and the FMLA and CA’s Family Rights Act and Pregnancy Disability Leave law.

Another post from them details the updates to to CA’s Alternative Work Week law.  I like the changes.

Improving Performance and Other News

Questions and Answers

I’m either asked these questions or I come across them in my work.  Here are three somewhat common ones.Questions?

Our nonprofit is getting ready for our first audit.  What are we supposed to do, and what does the auditor do?

You should receive a letter of engagement from the auditors that helps spell out the relationship.  You’ll also get a lists of things to do and get ready before the auditors come to your offices for the field work.  This article also talks about the process.  But if you have any questions you should ask your auditors before things get going to avoid any confusion and additional cost.

Should board members be allowed to contact staff directly?  Or should all contact go through the Executive Director?

This was a question on an email listserv and the answer that I liked was posted here.

I would like to have “Gross Receipts” defined. Would this include the value of our volunteer labor? Or is it strictly cash value of donations received?
